Allen folded his arms to try and shield his school shirt from the rain. It didn’t make a difference though; the water still seeped through the material, making it slightly transparent.
Allen was transferring from a small secondary school near the coast. He was forced to move after an akuma attack destroyed his house and left him homeless. Having only a little money, Allen couldn’t afford to buy a house of his own so he had to rent out an apartment in the city. This meant that he also had to attend a large school nearby. And this meant catching a bus, which is where our story begins – rain pouring down on Allen, wind blowing strong and cold air freezing his face.
A few cars sped past and splashed Allen’s legs but he didn’t feel anything because he was already too cold and wet.
It took about twenty minutes for the bus to pull up at the stop. The doors to the bus creaked open and Allen stepped in. Almost the instant Allen was inside, the doors slammed closed again.
A short, bent-over old man sat at the wheel.
“Pass?” his shaky voice croaked.
“Sorry?” Allen asked, a little confused.
“Do ya have a bus pass on ya?” the driver asked again.
“Oh, yes sorry…” Allen’s voice trailed off as he reached into his blazer pocket and pulled his pass out.
He showed the pass and the driver gave a little nod, starting the bus moving again. Allen walked down the bus until he saw a spare seat next to a very attractive, flat-chested girl with long, midnight-blue hair. She looked a few years older than Allen. Her arms were folded and she had a stern, serious look on her face.
“Er… e-e-excuse me?” Allen began.
The girl didn’t look up.
Two other students were sitting behind the girl. There was a red-haired boy and a dark green-haired girl.
“He’s actually going for it,” the red-haired whispered to the green-haired girl before sniggering.
Allen ignored him and carried on.
“Um… Is anyone… er… sitting there?” asked Allen, slightly nervous.
The girl still didn’t look up but replied with a simple, “Che…”
The girl with green hair leaned forward on her chair.
“Come on Kanda. If he doesn’t sit here then he’ll have to sit at the back. You know that’s practically suicide.” The girl moaned, clutching a small black notebook.
“Yeah Yu, be nice to the new kid.” The red-haired male joined in with the moaning.
The mysterious girl just growled in anger at the requests.
“Wait, he’s new?” asked the girl sitting next to the red head.
The boy nodded and the girl’s gaze focused on Allen. Small fireballs of enthusiasm flamed up in her eyes.
“Hi, I’m Lenalee,” she began, holding her hand out.
Allen shook it.
“That’s Lavi and that’s Kanda.”
Lenalee pointed to the students as she spoke. Allen nodded, taking the names in quickly.
“Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?”
Allen shook his head.
“Okay! First of all, what’s your name?”
“Allen Walker.” Allen answered politely.
“And how do you spell that?” asked Lenalee.
“A-l-l-e-n W-a-l-k-e-r.” Allen spelt it out as Lenalee scribbled it down in her notebook.
“Okay. Now, do you consider yourself to be seme or uke?” Lenalee asked, rather straightforward.
Allen blushed.
“Erm… I… I’ve never…”
“Definitely uke!” Lenalee cut Allen off and scribbled some more things into her notebook.
“Don’t worry, she does this to everyone.” The boy named Lavi said to Allen, who was looking a bit scared.
What was this school going to be like?
“Out of everyone on this bus, who are you most attracted to?” Lenalee enquired, looking Allen in the eye.
“Er… I don’t know…” Allen looked at his feet, hoping to avoid the question.
“Right, since you won’t answer, I’ll put you with Kanda.” Lenalee frantically scribbled in the notebook.
The girl called Kanda sat up straight and twisted around to face Lenalee.
“You little bitch!” she yelled out. “I’m not gay!”
Allen’s eyes widened. The puzzling girl was actually a guy! Allen stared at Kanda. He thought that Kanda did look like more of a guy when he had a good look.
“What are you gawking at Moyashi?” Kanda shot at Allen.
“M… Moyashi?” Allen questioned.
“Che… I’m wasting my time.” Kanda turned back around and folded his arms again.
Suddenly, whole bus jerked forward as it stopped outside the school. A mass of students all stood up, pushing past each other to get off the bus and into some fresh air. A rush of students pushed past Allen, shoving him onto a pair of now-empty seats. Allen steadied himself and sat quietly in the chairs. Kanda, Allen, Lavi and Lenalee stayed seated until everyone was off the bus.
After the bus was safe to walk down, the four remaining students made their way out of the bus and down the school drive, towards the main building.
“Can I see your timetable?” Lenalee asked Allen when they were inside the school.
Allen reached into his blazer pocket again and pulled out a folded piece of paper. Lenalee studied it for a few seconds and then handed it back to Allen.
“That’s awesome! You’re in mine and Kanda’s form.” Lenalee smiled while Kanda just sighed.
Lavi was in a different form to the others so he was only able to meet with them in a couple of lessons, where the forms were mixed, and at break and lunch. He'd headed off to his form room when they got inside the school.
“If you think you’re going to get lost, just follow me or Kanda, okay?”
Allen nodded at Lenalee and ran a little to catch up. His legs were much shorter than Lenalee’s and Kanda’s.
Allen took a little time to scan over his timetable for the day while he walked with his classmates. He had maths as his first lesson and then English after. There were six lessons a day and two breaks. The timetable consisted of two weeks so sometimes students would only get a lesson once a fortnight. That’s what happened to Allen. He only had art on the Friday of week 2.
When the three students arrived at their form room, M10, the entered slowly and walked to the back of the room. Allen didn’t know where to sit so he just stood up for a bit until the other students had arrived. There were two free seats when everyone had sat down. There was one right at the front next to a dark-haired boy with lots of eyeliner on and there was another next to Kanda at the back. Allen chose to sit next to Kanda. He thought he’d better ask before though, just in case the student next to him was away.
“Er… Kanda, was it?” Allen began.
Kanda looked up at him and scowled. Allen jumped a little.
“Um… Does anyone sit next to you normally?”
“Che,” was the only response Allen got from the moody teen.
Lenalee jabbed Allen in the waist with her elbow.
“No one sits there, just take the seat,” she whispered.
Allen nodded and sat down next to Kanda which got him another “che” as a result.
After a few moments, the teacher entered the room followed by a strange-looking girl with long blonde hair and what looked like eyeliner zigzagging over her mouth. The students stood up when the teacher entered so Allen copied them. The teacher just flapped his hand at the pupils, giving them permission to sit down again. The girl who had just entered the room was mumbling frantically to the teacher, who looked like he was ignoring her.
“Just sit down already!” he finally yelled.
The girl jumped but then smiled and laughed before sitting down next to the dark-haired boy at the front. The teacher sighed and walked over to the boy.
“Please, for all our sakes, keep control of your crazy brother Devitto.”
The boy named Devitto nodded and patted his now-revealed-to-be-male brother on the head.
Allen sighed. He’d wrongly guessed two students’ genders already today. How many more will he be shocked to find out?
“Right!” the teacher’s voice broke Allen’s trail of thought. “Unless I’ve misheard, I believe we have a new student.”
The class began turning their heads around. Allen tried to hide behind Kanda but his white hair was spotted by the teacher and he began striding towards the back of the room. The teacher grabbed Allen’s wrist and pulled him out of his seat, practically dragging him to the front of the room.
“Name?” the teacher asked when they were both at the front.
“Er… Allen… Walker…” Allen said quietly. He could see the students were talking about him and giggling.
“Okay Allen! My name’s Mr. Lee but just call me Komui, everyone else does.” He smiled at Allen.
Allen nodded and tried to sneak away to his seat. Komui pulled him back by his collar.
“Ah! Not so fast newbie!” an evil-looking smile grew across Komui’s face. “You need to tell us a little bit about yourself before you retreat.”
Allen stood still and tried to speak but nothing came out. He just looked like a stunned goldfish.
“Come on, don’t be shy.” Komui nudged Allen’s side.
“Er… There’s nothing to tell… My life’s a little boring.” Allen lied.
The bell rang for assembly just as Komui was going to speak again.
“Ah, saved by the bell Mr. Walker. We’ll have to ask you again tomorrow.”
Allen nodded and walked swiftly back to his seat. Kanda and Lenalee were already walking out of the room when Komui called to them.
“Remember kids! It’s full school assembly today! Don’t go wandering off around the school again!”
Allen rushed to catch up to both Lenalee and Kanda. He didn’t have a clue where to go so he just followed them to the assembly hall.
